I am

subhanallah one of the best poems i have ever read.

I am

I Am

I am — yet what I am none cares or knows,
My friends forsake me like a memory lost:–
I am the self-consumer of my woes:–
They rise and vanish in oblivion’s host,
Like shadows in love’s frenzied stifled throes:–
And yet I am, and live – like vapors tossed

Into the nothingness of scorn and noise,–
Into the living sea of waking dreams,
Where there is neither sense of life or joys,
But the vast shipwreck of my life’s esteems;
Even the dearest, that I love the best,
Are strange – nay, rather stranger than the rest.

I long for scenes, where man has never trod;
A place where woman never smiled or wept;
There to abide with my creator, God;
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept:
Untroubling and untroubled where I lie;
The grass below – above the vaulted sky.

  • Do you remember Room 25
    Where love began to thrive
    Like honey in a bee-hive?
    That memory’s kept alive
    In the heart you forced open
    With a smile I wouldn’t see so often.
    This heart, which was once a heaven,
    Is now but an oven.
    Like all students, you sat in front of me
    I taught you English and you taught me
    Things no one else could ever see:
    “One may find in a river what can’t be found in the sea” !
    Now you’re gone — like all the other students.
    But Room 25 is still full of students.
    And yet no more love is there in Room 25:
    Only the love in my heart is still alive !
