I hear of people going to their local mosques and asking the imams to find them a wife/husband. Anyone seen this case? How does it work? Does one then just give in to whoever the imam brings? since beggars can’t be choosers. I personally would feel like a charity case…. perhaps it’s Kibr. May guide us all.

Why would you feel like it's a charity case? It's a perfectly acceptable method and done all over the world too. As long as you are honest with the imam and the prospective person I think you'd do fine inshaAllah.
