Regarding yesterday's verse....praising those standing in the night to seek the mercy of Allah and fearing judgement, Allah made qiyam ul lail for the dignity of the believers and a fard on Prophet Muhammad saw.
It is sunnah to recite on a friday, surah sajdah and surah insan.
Both surahs refer to qiyam ul lail. Surah Sajdah praises the believeres: (v.16) "their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend out of what We have bestowed upon them." they do not get enough sleep, they forsake their beds asking Allah in seeking His mercy.
In surah Insan, Allah orders Prophet Muhammad saw to make sujood for Allah and to make much tasbeeh. (v.26) "And during the night, prostrate yourself to Him and glorify Him a long night through."
When Prophet Muhammad came to madinah, Abdullah ibn Salaam, a jewish rabbi before entering Islam, came to see who the prophet was. He heard him say 'spread peace, feed the hungry, maintain close relationships with the family and ray the rest of the night when people are sleeping.'
Another hadeeth related if you do everything of above, then you will enter jannah.
Tabbari(?) said that the qiyam ul lail is an honor and dignity for the believer. In surah muzzamil, Allah tells prophet Muhammad to stand up in night..."Stand all night, except a little, half of it or a little less than that or a little more. And recite the Quran in a slow style......." This was the tradition of the early muslims when they used to pray qiyam ul lail.
another hadeeth: Aisha when Allah revealed in surah Mumin(?) 'those who do what they do and their hearts tremble in fear and anxiety' she asked are these people who commit adultery and are disobedient to Allah? Prophet Muhammad replied, No, believers who pray, make siyam and qiyam etc yet still fear deeds aren't accepted by Allah. not out of doubt but to make sure they fulfill their obligations to Allah.
Also an example that Aisha rad was an obedient wife and that we should also teach and reveal what is in the Quran to our wives etc..
Following the good deeds and qiyam, there is a tradition of the Prophet to make rememberance of Allah (dhikr) reciting sayid istighfar, the master of all the istighfars* in asking forgiveness: ["repeat after me" lol shaykh said that in english lol]
allahumma anta rabbi la illa ha illa anta khalaqtani wa ana abduk, wa ana 'ala 'ahdik wa wa'dik ma astatatu aoudhu bika min sharri ma suanatu, abou aou laka binia'amatika 'alayya, wa aboo aou bidhanbi, faghfirli fainnahoo la yaghfirud dhunubi ila anta.
" Oh Allah, you are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You, You created me and I am Your servant and I abide to Your covenant and promise as best I can, I take refuge in You from the evil of which I have committed. I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You."
we should make a habit everday , esp after doing good deeds of hasanah etc to make istighfar etc in order to get closer to Allah swt.
* sidenote: it's mentioned in sahih bukhari, that if you recite this day and night with firm belief, then when you die, you will be among the people of paradise. (bukhari, vol.8, #318 )
