Salam Moe, sometimes in life you have to make decisions which unbeknownst to you turn out to be real forks in the road of life.
ie sometimes small decisions like whether or not to go to the prom changes and determines the rest of your life
the same thing happenned to me, while in high school, like everyone i had the choice to go, but even if i justified that i was only going to say 'good bye to friends' and wasn't going to drink, do drugs or dance or mix with guys (all haram by the way), to be in such an atmosphere and partake in such an event just shows where my allegiance really is and who i am.
so if you go to the prom you are saying... i am the same as any non-muslim. it shows your identify and who you are.
i think many people like to justify things like this in their life ie going to bars to 'meet people', going to parties because it's for 'business' , but they don't realize that just by going there you've already crossed to the other side and have already made your decision.
by the way, how can a muslim stand to be in a place full of everything haram, where everything stands for the opposite of good and islam? where are our principles really...and are we being true to ourselves when later we claim to be muslims, but we do everything the non-muslims do?
naseeha to myself first but maybe a question every potential muslim prom goer should ask themselves this year.

im not trying to be harsh by say this but what if you don't make it back home alive? is that that the last deed you want to commit?
in the future, if you do go to the prom, you might regret it. sure ppl say you could alosregret not going but i really don't think it's going to be worth it.
here's an idea: what me and my fellow albanyian highschoolers did was create an anti-prom. the guys got together and went on a picnic, played bakestball and just hung out (mayeb br. lightingatnite can tell us some more) and the sisters got together at sr. jannah adn sr. se7en's house and had a party.
this is a way to hang out with fellow muslims and have fun without going to the prom

As Salaam ALaikum.
ALl I can say is DO NOT GO!!!!!! Everything about the prom is haraam and not only are you involving yourself in something haraam (as far as I know anyone who even sits at a table where alcohol is served will be cursed) you are also giving the non-musilms the wrong impression of propper islamic behavior. You have to remember that others are lookiing at you as an example of Islam and you never want to give bad dawah even if you are not consciously giving it. A sister I know almost went to her prom and let me tell you she was tempted to do all sorts of things because her so-called kuffar friends encouraged her to do wrong. They even went with her to buy a dress and told her how good she looked in a mid calf, sleeveless dress!!!!! And you know what, she bought it!!! It is dangerous ground to tread on especially at that age when you are more vunerable.
Allah Knows Best.

as salaamu alaykum,
At this one conference I went to, someone asked the speaker if it was ok to go the prom. He was like, the angel of death can show up at your door at any time, you really want him to catch you at the prom?
You gotta really think about why you're going. You know what goes on at the prom. Why should you go and spend your time with people doing things that are wrong? And even if you don't do that stuff, why should you go and feel bad about not doing them?
Let those losers do what they want to do. You're Muslim, bro. You're above that. You're someone with honor, with strength, with dignity, you struggle to be pure. Don't get caught up in this garbage, and don't feel bad because you choose not to be part of that.
No, I didn't go to prom last year. Or homecoming, or the spring ball, or whatever else. And I'm not going this year. And you know what kid, it's allll good. People look at me like I'm insane when I tell them that. But it's the same look I get when I tell them I don't date. Or that I don't drink. Or that I pray five times a day. Or that I believe in Allah. If you're Muslim, you're gonna be looked at as weird. Goin to the prom isn't gonna change that.
Keep your distance from things like that. Guard your heart from having to deal with those fools and what they like to do. Being in a situation like that will do nothin good for you.

They thought I was a nerd when I told them that. ;) But yeah Se7en is right. There were some really good articles out there about people that went to a prom (Muslims) and bad things that happened and those that didn't go and some of their thoughts on the matter. I don't remember where I saw it I'll have to look for it.
Hmmm, or maybe it was on my web page? ???

As Salaam ALaikum,
If you go to the prom you might as well be going to the club or any other party because it is the same thing. Muslims DO NOT go to parties, period. I hope all this "gentle" advice changes your mind brother:)

Moe, don't go to prom. People say that you will regret it and wish you had gone twenty years from now. I didn't go to prom. And I dont miss it. I don't miss any of the stupid kids that I was friends with or had to put up with. and i don't miss the stupid, ugly, smelly, hallways either. I dont' miss anyone or anything from high school. period. everytime i pass by my stupid high school, i glance at it and no feelings of any sort overwhelm me.
This may sound like someone who had a rough time with school and kids. You are probably thinking that I had a hard time fitting in being a hijabi sister and all. Not at all. In fact, i got along with everyone of thos idiotic, self-centered, stupid, immature kids and they liked me! (i pretended to like a lot of them).
I got a lot of respect from my peers for saying no to stuff like that and speaking against it. Prom is stupid. It is degrading. Take a look around at everybody during this time. Take a look at everyone around Homecoming. Listen to the depression in the girls eyes. You see a girl with red eyes, go up to her and ask her what's wrong. It will have something to do with not getting a date. Or it will have to do with working long hours for that dress that she will only wear once in her life time. And remember this girl, working long hours, will be a poor girl, because only they go through this hell. And even then, they can't measeure up to the rich girls who buy even more expensive dresses. It tears them down, makes them feel really bad about themselves to the point of suacidal thoughts. shame.
The poor guys will work long hours too, to pay for the food, the rented tux, the limo, the hotel room. Don't be a part of this. Some of these poor guys will not work these same long hours to support their little baby brother or sister, or so that s/he can have a new stuffed animal. Don't be a part of this. You may not do this type of thing but you are being a part of it indirectly and thus contributing to such injustice.
There are so many girls who are labeled as 'ugly' by their peers who will never go to prom, who stay up all night crying and wishing that they could live up to other's standers of beauty.
Notice, how people's grades will drop when these major dances roll around, due to stres. That is really pathetic.
I dont know how much the tickes cost at your school, but at my school, they cost 40 per person. Instead of giving that money over to these people who are giving a place to young kids to rub on each other to music, why don't you go buy yourself a new computer game or donate the money to a good cause?

I must say Saleema, that was really great advice. I don't see why people always say that if you miss your prom you will regret it twenty years later. I think it is just one of those things Americans say just because everyone else says it and they don't really think about. These people must be really shallow and have depressing lives to regret a party for so long! I mean really! It is just one night of a teenagers life, how could it mean so much? Unless you do something stupid like loose your virginity, get drunk and sick for the first time or something stupid like that. I didn't go to my prom and I was not even a muslim at the time. I just didn't see what all the hub bub was about! It's just one night for pete's sake! I think If you are gonna regret anyhting for the rest of your life regret not going on hajj when you had the chance and now you are unable to, or not being there when I loved one passed away, or missing a bunch of salats for YEARS that you can't make up completely. THAT is something to regret, not a silly and HARAAM party!
