White Paper on Education
According to the White Paper on Education, the British Government has
decided to hand over state schools to private companies to improve
standard of education. The process of privatization started in 1998 in
Islington and Surrey and from now on it will be extended to all big inner
cities schools, where majority of pupils is underachievers.
I would like to draw the attention of the plight of majority of
underachiever Muslim pupils in inner cities schools who are at the bottom of
the educational ladder. I do not blame them or their parents.
Multicultural education did nothing for them. It damaged race relation and failed
to improve standard and quality of education. The recent riots are the
clear examples of its failure. The needs and demands of the Muslim
pupils are different from others. They need different type of environment
to develop confidence and motivation, which will help them to raise
their standard of education. A handful of Muslim schools with meager
resources have produced good discipline and better exam results. Muslim
community does not have the resources to set up schools for each and every
Muslim pupil. Its number is on the increase due to high birth rate,
immigration and conversion. My humble proposal is that those state schools
where Muslim pupils are in majority should be handed over to Muslim
Educational Trusts and Charities. They are in a better position to manage
and control them. They will provide an educational system based on the
needs and demands of Muslim parents as well as Muslim pupils. Muslim
teachers will act as role models. Top Muslim teachers will be recruited
from abroad to teach National Curriculum. It will also solve the problem
of teacher shortages to some extent.
Special attention will be given to the teaching of English language
without which Muslim pupils cannot compete with the rest of the population
in employment and in higher education and scientific research. For this
purpose local English speaking teachers will be employed to teach
English language, literature and poetry. At the same time teaching of Arabic
language as a Quranic and religious language will be given a priority.
Urdu language will be taught to the pupils from the sub- continent as a
social and emotional language so that they do not find themselves cut
of from their roots. Islamic atmosphere will help them to develop
Islamic Identity crucial for mental, emotional and mental development.
Phe Education Act of 1944 clearly emphasis that the children should be
educated according to the needs and demands of the parents and my
proposal is not contrary to it. I hope that it will help to raise the
standard of education. They will leave with good discipline and better grades
to pursue higher education to serve humanity. They will improve and
enhance the social, spiritual and economic prosperity of the British
society at large. It will pave a way for better understanding and respect
between the host community and Muslim community.
On the other hand if my proposal is not implemented than the number of
private religious Madressas will emerge every where. The parents will
have no choice but to send their children who will spend most of their
time learning fundamentals of Islam while ignoring English language and
National Curriculum, making them misfit for the British society at
large. My proposal will produce a generation of young Muslims who are
capable of facing and solving the challenges of dynamic and ever changing
world, thus, contributing for the prosperity of the small global village.
A Muslim is supposed to be a citizen of the whole world irrespective of
class, creed and race who respect and understand others.
