|Assalam alaykum guys,|
I have a question with regards to something which has been bothering
me. I need to know if it is ok to dance at Mehendi's or wedding events
where you are in the company of other women only. Most,if not all of
these events are done using indian music from indian movies. I guess my
main question would be is this halal. I know we have to be weary of
any other culture seeping into islam. But since i am from indo/pak
heritage i dunno what to think. Is it haram, and why is it haram. I know a
lot of girls that dance at mehendi's and they say this is ok cuz
they're in front of girls. They spend a lot of time practising every step and
getting it right and making sure they copy the dancer in the indian
movie perfectly. I know over here in Sacremento we have alot of muslims
from the east. And a few of my friends that are hijabi's also dance. I
feel pressured and feel they are portraying women who wear hijabs in a
bad light. They make me at times think its ok to partake in these
types of events. Are there evils in this. Ok i'll shut up now. :)
Thanks for your responses guys.

I exactly know what you are talking about. Well i always thought that henna's and mehndi's if they are seperate, women can do their own thing. You can be happy ,sing and dance however, ofcourse not mimicking the Kuffar. ~~~key is not MIXED~~~~
I am sure someone more knowledgeable will elaborate or Ahem *Se7en* will direct us to another link

from what I've heard, women can lightly entertain each other amongst themselves... which includes dancng, but the real hypocrisy comes in also with the message of the song. If its about some girl/boyfriends frolicking and stuf, isn't that the wron message? aslaamualikum. abdullah,.

This is from Islam.org's Fatwa section on the subject of dancing.
Question : Is the music and dance between girls halal or haram?
Reply: If singing does not impede you from doing mandatory activities
such as praying, studying or doing other obligations, and it does not
coincide with unlawful things such as bad words, then itís lawful.
Everything is permissible unless there is a clear statement of prohibition.
Similarly, dancing is also allowed especially among women unless it
impedes carrying out mandatory obligations or coincides with unlawful acts.
To me, most of the dancing girls do now, imitating from Indian movies
is haram. Girls, like you said, spend hours upon hours perfecting their
routine. They spend all this time and then some of the routines they do
are offensive and vulgar. This to me is clearly haram. I have only
watched one Pakistani movie in my life and I have never seen any Indian
movies. And this is because all the time we spend watching these movies we
waste and they become so addictive. We see one and we want to see more
and then we emulate the actors. I don't understand why so many people
who are Muslim want to pay money to see movies which are produced by
Bollywood that is so against the Muslim belief system? That ultimately
supports and gives profit to Hindus ? I think that many Muslims should
cut down on the amount of movies we watch that don't support the Muslim's
way of life.

im confused, how can something "seem haram" when an imam has stated that's not? i'm not sure how you expect someone asking a question to interpret that?
my only reason in saying that is that this idea of something being "haram" is a pretty serious thing..so we better be 100% sure when we call something haram, and not just as it "seems" yea?
but um, i do have to say, that my friends and i have recentlygoten togehter to have "girlie parties"..sometimes dancing b4 shadis adn what nots.. alhamdulilah many of us are hijabis and i think it just serves as kind of a relaxing thing for us and "have fun" amongst ourselves. if anyone of us actually spent an inordinant amt of time learning steps, i would say that something was wrong with em and that is generally not the case..just a bunch of ppls having a good time and enjoying each others company.

|Muslims (male or female, hijabi/bearded or non-hijabi/non-bearded) dancing on the tunes of LOVE songs (Indian, Pakistani, Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Chinese, Arabic, American, or whatever!)? Imitating the singers/actors/actresses *step by step* in their dances?|
I think that's WRONG!
But, sigh, what does it matter what I think? :)
P.S. Trust me, things are worse back home. These dances are done in front of the opposite sex. And often, men and women are paired up!
P.P.S. I have yet to see a hijabi sister or a bearded brother do these dances back home though!

Peace and e-Greetings be upon you.
I think the brothers at IslamicaWeb said it best:
Pigs are Haram.
Dancing is Haram.
Dancing Pigs are REALLY Haram!
