Meaning of "Qayyim" in Arabic?
04/15/05 at 08:37:51
I was wondering what Qayyim means in Arabic? One person told me that it means principal. I was thinking of the famous scholar, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. Then I looked at this list:
And it says that Qayyim is one of the names that the Prophet (pbuh) was known by.
It says there that it means Right and True, Straight (I heard it means "just" also).
Qayyam and Qayyim

[slm] please see the dua in Arabic at end. In the third line the word "Qayyam-us-samawat wal ard" occurs. But this word is for Allah (swt) only. This shouldn't be used for anyone else. What difference there is between Qayyam and Qayyim, perhaps someone else can tell.
I think the meaning "Holder" also applies to Qayyam. Look at the translation below. I think it is translated here as "Sustainer".
The Prophet (S) would say (as an opening supplication in prayer) when rising from sleep to perform prayers during the night:
‘O Allaah, to You belongs all praise, You are the Light of the heavens and the Earth and all that is within them. To You belongs all praise, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the Earth and all that is within them. To You belongs all praise. You are Lord of the heavens and the Earth and all that is within them. To You belongs all praise and the kingdom of the heavens and the Earth and tall that is within them. To You belongs all praise, You are the King of the heavens and the Earth and to You belongs all praise. You are The Truth, Your promise is true, Your Word is true, and the Day in which we will encounter You is true, the Garden of Paradise is true and the Fire is true, and the Prophets are true, Muhammad (S) is true and the Final Hour is true. O Allaah, unto You I have submitted, and upon You I have relied, and in you I have believed, and to You I have turned in repentance, and over You I have disputed, and to You I have turned for judgment. So forgive me for what has come to pass, and what I have hidden and what I have made public. You are Al-Muqaddim and Al-Mu’akhhir. None has the right to be worshipped except You, You are my Deity, none has the right to be worshipped except You.’

qayyim or qayoom
04/15/05 at 11:39:05
The word qayyIm is valueble like the name of ibn jawziya. Anyone or anything can be qayyim. Like a book you read you benefited you say it was qayyim.
but the name of Allah is QayOOm. No one else can be The Qayoom. It means the Self-Subsisting. Like in ayat alkursi in surat albaqara: Allahu la Illah illa Howa Al7ay Alquyoom.
I am not aware this is one of the names of prophet Muhammad [saw] The list is not authentic anad there are many that circulate the net without proofs. Even some of the proofs they supposedly give is wrong.
For example they say Munji Saviour is 62:2 but it is not there. KaleemuAllah is Mosa as prophet Muhammad called him that. And many other are wrong. And so they might be discriptions like that he is concerned for you, but it does not make itism unnabi (the name of the prophet) how can a nick name be "he is concerned for you", and you cannot add any words or letters like: "the one who is... (concerned for you)" before it, coz what about saviour? If you add "the one who is" a saviour , it becomes Allah and not prophet Muhammad!)
Kashif alkurab is not a human either. hte one who removes hardship and tribulations. Honestly these are quick random ones I took just to give you example, the lists are usually full of them. It is not hard to find.
I don't want to go too much into this since it is not your question, but be ware of these lists of the prophet [saw] names. Some of them do shirk attributing things to the prophet [saw] that should only belong to sifat of Allah alone.
There is a hadeeth when prophet muhammad [saw] himself lists some of his names like alma7ee, al3aqib, al7ashir, ahmad, but I don't recall this one being one of them.
