Death Threats for UK Top Muslim Cop

CAIRO — Britain's most senior Muslim police officer has received death threats after suing Scotland Yard's top brass over discrimination, The Independent reported on Monday, September 1.

"They are very credible threats," said Shahrokh Mireskandari, the lawyer of Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur.

"It has been by email, and phone. We (the law firm) have received some as well."

Ghaffur, Britain's top Muslim officer senior policeman, is suing Metropolitan Police chief Sir Ian Blair and other senior policemen for racial discrimination a high-profile race row.

He is accusing Blair of playing a role in a campaign of harassment, racial prejudice and humiliation against him during eight years at the Met.

The employment tribunal is expected to take place next year.

Ghaffur has already hired personal security after receiving a barrage of death threats that also involved his family.

"It takes a lot to get a senior policeman worried," says Mireskandari.

The Ugandan-born officer, who was until recently responsible for planning security for the 2012 Olympics, has been excluded from key Olympic security planning meetings.

Ghaffur, who has opposed extending the pre-charge detention of terror suspects to 42 days, was also browbeaten to keep quiet about his opposition.

His contract has been renewed by one year, unlike other officers who have theirs renewed by five years.

"Inciting Hatred"

His lawyer claims that some of the threats came from serving Metropolitan officers.

"They are very serious and we do not have the trust and confidence in the people we have to go to get security."

He suggested Ghaffur started receiving hate mail and death threats after deputy commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson suggested the senior Muslim officer should "shut up, and get on with the job".

"What Stephenson said has incited hatred against Tarique Ghaffur and it was wholly irresponsible," Mireskandari insists.

"We are now preparing a formal complaint and want an independent investigation."

Ghaffur's lawsuit follows a similar complaint by a senior Muslim Asian officer against Scotland Yard.

Commander Shabir Hussain has accused Sir Blair of sidelining black and Asian detectives and surrounding himself with a "golden circle" of handpicked favorites.

A June audit by the Demos think-tank and the National Association of Muslim Police (NAMP) found that Muslim officers in Scotland Yard are being routinely discriminated against.

It said Muslim officers were being overlooked in promotion and are almost "entirely absent" from specialist operations such as counter-terrorism.

Of the 300 members of the Association of Chief Police Officers, only eight belong to ethnic minorities.

Only 32 out of 1,600 superintendents are black or Asian, and only 0.7 percent of police officers are Muslim.

The Almighty Allah says,

"When a servant thinks of Me, I am near.
When he invokes Me, I am with him.
If he reflects on Me in secret, I reply in secret,
And if he acknowledges Me in an assembly,
I acknowledge him in a far superior assembly."

- Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reptd by Abu Huraira
