Asalamualaikum

Ramadan Mubarak and hope all of you are taking full advantage of it!

Well I was never sure if this was a myth. So are we allowed or not allowed to kill spiders?

salam

From what I gather its better not to, just catch them and put them outside...interestingly non-muslims are averse to killing spiders too, apparently they regard it as bad luck!

Wassalaam

And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright. Surah 2  Verse 186

Asalamualaikum wrt wb,

All praise be to Allah.

The scholars say that harmful pests may be killed.  However, one should never use fire to kill anything living.  If the spider is harmful, it may be killed.    Here is the response of the noble scholar Shaikh Ibn Baz on this issue:

Question:  Is it permissible to kill insects that may be found in the house, such as ants, cockroaches and the like, by burning them? If it is not permissible, what should we do?

If these insects are harmful, they may be killed with insecticides, but not with fire. The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There are five pests that may be killed whether one is in ihraam or not: rats, scorpions, crows, kites [a hawk-like bird], and mad dogs.” (Reported by Muslim, 2071). Another report adds a sixth, snakes. Thus the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us that they are harmful pests, and that they are unlike other animals which do not do harm, and so he told us to kill them whether we are in ihraam or not. If other creatures, such as ants or cockroaches or dung-beetles, cause harm, they may also be killed with insecticides, but not with fire. And Allaah knows best.

Fataawa Islaamiyaah, Ibn Baaz, 451

And Allah knows best.

Be merciful to those on earth, and the One in the Heavens will be merciful to you.

Here on the East Coast in the US there are some common household spiders which may cause harm..

Namely the black widow and brown recluse. The brown recluse is especially nasty as the bite can rot away large parts of skin.

If I see a spider that looks potentially harmful in my home, I kill it.

I try to remember to count my blessings each day because I have many:

To be thankful for my health, and that of my loved ones, the presence of my husband and the continuation of our marriage, that we can pay our bills and have food on the table..

So many blessings but often, so little thanks!

Asalam Alaikum,

No idea about whether one should or should not.. but I think it is reasonable that if it is a threat..

I myself always try to move spiders or let them be, or any other living creature for that matter. I like spiders, before I became a Muslim. They are really awesome one of millions of signs of Allah. And they catch bugs!

I'd try moving it.. really, they tend to  be quite harmless.
