So I've had really bad tonsillitis for the last couple of days. Thursday, I was completely bedridden, I had a high temp, and could not stand it was awful, yesterday the sore throat kicks in, today I am able to move around and am lucid but cannot move my neck, worse Fatima appears to have caught the dratted virus from me (it is a viral infection right?).

So I make Fatima gargle with salt water, which seems to get rid of the white spots, and I've been (pretty successfully) combining home remedies with conventional painkillers as I can't get a doctors appointment till Monday evening probably.

So then, and I have no idea why, as I'm usually very sensible about this, I GOOGLED tonsils, just the word tonsils....result, I fear I am dying, right now I feel my airways closing as I type....make dua for me please!!!!

If I see this out, I will never google another body lymph as long as I live (I did learn that tonsils are a kind of lymph- note I have no idea what the heck a lymph is), and there are apparently more than the set of tonsils at the back of the throat that constantly get infections located in our body (mostly around the head area back of nose etc).

It was the photo of the bloody tonsils on green tissue that did it for me..... do not, I repeat do not google any body part, learn from me, who is (probably not) very certain she cannot breathe.......

Tonsillitis should not impair neck movement.  See a doctor ASAP to rule out meningitis.

That's not the right answer.......I didn't think I could feel worse!!!

I'm feeling OK actually, my glands are swollen like big swollen things, and I guess I'm a big wimp, neck is stiff, but that may be because I've not slept well, joints are OK, and no strange rash or blemishes on my skin that weren't there before.

I am going to the doctors Monday, taking both girls too.

btw, an interesting fact that Google threw up, tonsils have something to do with working with our immune system....I'm desperately imparting knowledge now...

I had a very severe case of the flu in mid January.  I am susceptible to cold/flu and it brings me down faster than anything else hence I dread it.  Plus I got tired of being saddled with bags of medication (a whole pharmacy/chemist almost) wherever I had consulted a doctor before.  So, this time round I decided to fight it with home remedies too.  A sore throat, loss of voice, coughing, a running nose - yuck!  To get rid of the cough, I bought a cough syrup over the counter at a chemist.  I hadn't tried this before and the name was Flu-gone! I was bedridden for 3 days - 14, 15 and 16 January 2009.

My cold/flu still persisted with constant throat irritation and I would cough every time I laughed.  Then over the last week or so, I started experiencing dryness in mouth during the day and when I sleep.  On Thursday I saw blood when I blew my nose, sometimes in clots and sometimes watery.

Yesterday, I decided to visit my ENT.  He asked the name of the syrup I took and I told him.  He said that buying medicine over the counter is not good unless prescribed by a doctor.  He told me that Flu-gone's effects is what is causing the dryness in my throat and now the blood in my nose.  He advised I stop blowing my nose because it would lead to a nose bleed!

Ah, the pitfalls of self-medication and over the counter drugs! Home remedies are safe at least! Soup, honey - though I dislike honey, lemon, black pepper and ginger which do not work well my ulcers but still good, lots of fluids, etc.

He prescribed bentopic-n ear/nose drops for my nose and solvin expectorant-plus tablets for my throat.  Having started the medication yesterday, I am starting to feel better, ALHAMDU LILLAH.

Dr. Harish Rupani is the best ENT specialist in Nairobi.

The Almighty Allah says,

"When a servant thinks of Me, I am near.
When he invokes Me, I am with him.
If he reflects on Me in secret, I reply in secret,
And if he acknowledges Me in an assembly,
I acknowledge him in a far superior assembly."

I'm much better alhumdulillah.

No see if an illness persists over three days I go to the doctors.

My home remedies are spiced ginger tea lots of, chicken soup (it works I tell you), the old honey and lemon with a tiny pinch of turmeric (a natural antibiotic), manuka honey added to everything (except the chicken soup), I've also got some sort of manuka honey and kalonji concoction which seems to have very fast results, and the old rosehip syrup dosing (good old fashioned sickly sweet, super strength natural Vitamin C) the second I start to feel run down, and gargling with salt water works too I tell you. Add lots of rest, and tepid baths to bring down body temperatures if you're feverish or wear light clothes and not being covered by a million blankets, rub vicks into every available surface area depending on whether one is also feeling achy and generally it does work.
I have other remedies but these are the ones that come to mind immediately.

The problem is, I'm so busy at the moment I completely disregarded the signs of the imminent malady, and found myself completely unable to get out of bed one morning. Still alhumdulilah I'm sure its character building ...or something like that!

I'm not against going to the doctor, I hate adding to her workload if the illness is easily dealt with at home. I'm also well stocked up with over the counter remedies which I know work, for anyone in England tyrozets are brilliant for tonsillitis they're the strongest non prescription antibiotics one can get, tunes and strepsils are useless!!

Glad to hear that you are better.  You scared me when you said that you had a stiff neck.  Meningitis has flu like symptoms, but causes a stiff neck.

I think I caught your tonsillitis though.
