Salam alaikum,

surfing the web I found diametral different views on the relationships between muslims and non-muslims.

How do you view this field? Is a friend (in the sense of comrade, college, neighbour,...) a wali? I thought the Arabic word wali means a guardian or a person you give power of attorney against somebody.

Can anybody explain, please!

Wa alaikum assalam

Asalamualaikum wrt wb,

All praise be to Allah,

The verse you are referring to is regarding taking non-Muslims as allies and protectors without necessity.  However it has been established in the Sunnah that the Prophet, peace be upon him, used the help of non-Muslims on certain occaisions in the case of necessity, such as during the Hijra when he used the help of a non-Muslim guide, etc.

The basis in Islam is that non-Muslims should be treated with kindness and gentle calling so as to attract them to Islam.  This is in the case that they do not attack our religion or expel us from the land.

As for having collegues and non-Muslims companions, this is permissible, and kindness to neighbors is a must.  But beware of being affected by any doubts in you religion or fitna if someone commits sins openly in front of you.  It is best to keep righteous and religious companions who will help you in your religion.

And Allah knows best.
