A university has an open position of an "Adjunct". What does that mean, an assistant to a professor, a TA ??

As far as I know, an adjunct position is a teaching position comparable to an assistant professor, except that the person is not employed at the university full time - usually the person has a "day job". The adjunct position although permanent, involves teaching a course or two on a routine basis in the university.  Also, a PhD is not necessary for an adjunct position.

Take care
