HLF Defendants Moved to CMUs, New Addresses

The Muslim Legal Fund of America confirmed through the Bureau of Prisons that Shukri Abubaker, Mohammed Elmezain, Ghassan Elashi and Mufid Abdulqader were moved to Communication Management Units.

These units are designed to tightly monitor and control prisoner communications and are the subject of criticism by civil rights organizations. The Center for Constitutional Rights filed a lawsuit on March 30 to challenge the legality of CMUs.

Lend MLFA a Helping Hand

The Hands of Liberty volunteer program is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to help spread awareness of the Muslim Legal Fund of America. Here's how it works:

    * More people need to learn about MLFA.
    * We receive shipments of new brochures each month.
    * We need your help getting them into the hands of community members.

Can you help us?

    * Do you attend Friday prayers at your local mosque?
    * Can you stand outside after the prayer and hand out brochures once a month?
    * Can you apply a sticker to each brochure prior to handing them out?

If you answered "yes" to all the above, then please email usand we will send you more information about this exciting program.

"I have a foreign accent and live in (or plan to visit) Arizona. I'm worried that I will be arrested simply for having a foreign accent."

Arizona's new immigration law "orders immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there's reason to suspect they're in the United States illegally." (CNN) Since its signing, the law has been amended to prohibit the use of race solely as the basis for which a police officer can demand papers. (LA Times)

Unfortunately, there appears to be no clear guidelines for police officers to determine what qualifies as reasons to suspect an individual is in the US illegally. As such, it is reasonable to assume that a foreign accent in addition to race could trigger an immigration inquiry.

If you or someone you know is detained due to Arizona's new immigration law, please call the Muslim Legal Fund of America at 866-MLFA-USA (866-653-2872).

The Case of Fahad Hashmi

After three years of solitary confinement and one day after Judge Preska approved the government's request for an anonymous jury with extra security measures, Fahad Hashmi agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy for allowing an acquaintance to store waterproof socks, ponchos and raincoats in his apartment.

As part of the plea, the government dropped the remaining three charges against Hashmi. Sentencing is June 7 and he faces up to 15 years in prison, with four years already served. He was facing up to 70 years in prison, and supporters of Hashmi are taking note of the fact that the government shaved 55 years off the potential sentence on the eve of this trial. (Justice4Fahad.org)

On April 21, the Center for Constitutional Rights issued a denouncement of the government's "attempt to frighten" the jury in Fahad Hashmi's trial, in which they stated:

The case against Fahad Hashmi in itself raises many red flags related to the violation of his rights, prosecutorial overreach under the material support statute, and the unduly punitive and restrictive special administrative measures under which he has been kept without trial for nearly three years. The government's call for the jurors at his trial, which is set to begin next week, to be anonymous and kept under extra security because of the attention and political activism these issues have drawn to the case is a clear attempt to influence the jury by creating a sense of fear for their safety and to paint Mr. Hashmi as already guilty. (CCR)

This case demonstrates the challenges Muslims face in America. Law enforcement overreaching, court manipulation and discriminatory prosecution are placing everyone's liberties in danger. The Muslim Legal Fund of America is dedicated to helping Muslims face these challenges and we call on your to support our efforts with a tax-exempt contribution today.

Thank you for your support.

Khalil Meek, President
Muslim Legal Fund of America
