as salaamu alaykum,
I found this article pretty interesting in light of something I remember one of my teachers saying a number of times over the years: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/11/new-poll-shows-support-for-repeal-of-dont-ask-dont-tell/
The article states that when people were asked about "homosexuals", their response was more negative than when asked the same question using the term "gay" instead.
I remember more than once my teacher saying that we should try to use the word homosexual when referring to these people and their actions, and not gay, because gay is euphemestic and makes the action seem lighter and less grave than it really is, and therefore more easily accepted.
SubhanAllah, may Allah preserve our teachers and increase them.
