What's in a name? That which we call a zahra. By any other name would smell as shariah.

As salaam Allaikum to all.
I'd like to talk to the older sisters and bothers on the board about vaccinations.
We give them to our kids, our grandkids get them, but we neglect ourselves.

Last month, one day I had a sore throat and the next I was in ICU on a ventilator.
I had somehow gotten Hib  (NO not HIV)
My children who are now in their 30's? All they had back then when they were babies was polio, DPT and MMR's vaccines.
Now a days (my grandchildren included) the list of vaccinations are as long as ones arm.
Hib is something children get vaccinated for and adults RARELY get.
It settled in my epiglottis and that is a flap that covers your windpipe to avoid food from going down.
It had swollen and just about cut off my airway.
I had been to see the doctor one day with a sore throat and had trouble swallowing and the doctor could not see anyting wrong, no red throat, no infected ears but could see I was in pain and figured it was maybe an infection in my neck glands and sent me home with antibiotics and pain pills, went to bed that night and awoke at 1:50 am feeling weird and could not swallow, couldn't wake my husband up so I drove myself to the hospital. Shocked Cheesy
The night doctor and nurse were real jerks,  getting frustrated at me for not being able to swallow a pill, not liquid meds not a freeze pop. They couldn't see any redness in my throat.
Luckily by 7 am or so they ordered a CT as my heart rate was way up and I had just about lost my voice.
Luckily they found I had epiglottisittis (sp), they called in an ENT specialist immediately and stuck some thing down my throat to look, I remember him saying he could not even see my vocal chords and rushed me to the OR to be in-tubated, I was literally mins from having to have a trachea done  Shocked. You have to be awake (but somewhat sedated) to be in-tubated and I remember after the anisteolgist was done, him leaning back, looking up at the other staff and saying, " I never want to have to do that again'
Apparently he barely got the smallest tube down my airway. After I was out of the hospital and went to thank him
I asked if he did in fact say that or was it the drugs  Grin and he looked surprised and said he infact did say that he also told me when he was done he was actually shaking.
I remember feeling very comfortable in his care, he talked to me through it and I felt he knew what he was doing.

Anyway, getting to the main point. This past winter our community lost an infant to whooping cough, babies don't get vaccinated for it until 2, 4 and 6 months old. Whooping cough was going around this winter.
It is an illness a simple vaccination prevents sadly many of us in our 30's and 40's and up are no longer
immune since we have not been vaccinate in decades. We can have it or carry it and give it to an infant and not even know it. I don't ever want that on my conscience.
Now that I am better I am going to start getting updated on vaccines like tetanus, whooping cough, and other things. Adults aren't usually given an hib vaccine though.
But we can all prevent an innocent infant from dying if we get vaccinated for whooping cough.

So glad you're well Alhumdulillah.

I was thinking about you, but assumed you were busy with your grandkids and your farm and stuff.

You drove yourself to E&R,  Shocked maybe that's why the night doctors thought you were fine, they couldnt imagine someone in a real life threatening situation driving themselves to hospital?Huh?

I think they do checks here of immunity levels when pregnant and mine were fine, I'm not so sure what they check for tho(!)  I do know I was vaccinated for whooping cough it was a very tough decision for my parents, as the vaccine was dangerous and a friends child had been vaccine damaged by it.

Glad you're OK alhumdulillah, perhaps keep a horn by your bed to wake your husband with in future Cheesy

wsalam,

sorry to hear you were sick and in the hospital sister. inshaAllah you're doing better now! about vaccines, i think that most ppl don't get them when older because the chances of them getting something like polio or mmr is so low, so many have been vaccinated it's rare for the disease to spread in the US. also vaccines do have side effects and things so unless they're doctor recommended for some reason no one gets them. nice to see u around the madina after a long while Wink happy ramadan!!

I think the doctor in the appt during the day and later the ER doc were mifted cause I didn't have a red throat
even though I told them I had a sore throat and couldn't swallow. We all now know it's because the issue was
way down my throat lol.
My mom came to the hospital cause I called her, she is a retired nurse and was quite unhappy with the
doctors manor. At shift change the day ER doctor was real nice.
ICU folks were awesome and great. The doctors were great I had like four different ones. (ENT and others)
Alhumdulillah I was blessed with great care.

As to my husband, the poor man, I placed both the house phone and the cell near the bed before I left.
When my mother called him around 6 am, he said he kept reaching over my side of the bed trying to
stir me to answer the phone   Cheesy and didn't realize I wasn't there until he answered and my mother told him Cheesy
I did leave a note on the table for him and my son and DIL. (We all live together)
I never considered waking my son as he gets up early for work.

Sr. Fozia, I didn't know that whooping cough vaccines were dangerous. I have never heard of anyone I know having issues with it.

Sr. Jannah, the vaccines I was more thhinking about is that whooping cough, tetnus. Not polio or MMR.
Although California had quite the little outbreak of measles last year. Eastern, Wa the whopping cough outbreak.

Happy Ramadan Sisters, Happy Ramadan to all.

The whooping cough vaccing issue was when I was a baby 30+ years ago, the vaccines have changed significantly since then.

Seriously glad you're OK alhumdulillah.
