Scary and very sad:

A man and woman in New Jersey were walking to a relative's home with their small child after iftar when someone opened fire on them. By the time it was over, the wife was dead and the husband was in the hospital having been shot 4 times.

The police are calling it a "targeted shooting", but are releasing no details.

Mother fatally shot, father wounded in apparent targeted shooting on Boonton street
(NJ Star Ledger)

A mother walking with her 3-year-old son in Boonton late Tuesday night was shot and killed and her husband injured in what prosecutors are saying appears to be a targeted shooting. The family was taking a stroll after Ramadan’s traditional evening meal, authorities said this morning.

Neighbors said they heard between five and eight shots ring out on quiet Cedar Street in the Morris County town about 11:30 p.m., killing Nazish Noorani, 27, police and relatives said. The child, who was in his stroller, was not hurt, but her husband, Kashif Pervaiz, was taken to a local hospital with gunshot wounds, they said.

"This investigation is ongoing and the release of information at this stage would compromise the progress of same," said Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi. "From what we have already determined, however, it should be noted that this shooting clearly appears to be target specific and that there is not a continuing danger to the general public at large."
Bianchi wouldn't say which family member or both appeared to be the target. (More ... @ http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/08/mother_killed_and_father_gunne.html )

The police are looking harder at the husband now.  They think it's odd that Kashif Pervaiz received superficial wounds, while his wife Nazish Noorani was shot through the heart.  I dunno. I hope these suspicions prove to be groundless.  Huh?

Very sad indeed. May Allah forgive her and give the bereaved sabr. May that theory be baseless.

Very sad to hear. I often wonder what is so enticing in this world that one has to kill for?

wsalam,

la hawla wala qawwata illa billah. so SICK. i guess it proves muslims are immune to absolutely nothing. it's almost exactly like the south African killing but not sure if the husband admitted to it in that one. don't understand how ppl think they can get away with these things. why not just get a divorce??!! sick..

Yes Islam doesn't forbid divorce. But it also doesn't require it for a man to marry another.
He should have just married his girlfriend and made her Hallal to him.

wsalam,

From the blog entry: "This is mind-boggling. The fact that a family could pressure a daughter to stay in a bad marriage, where she is likely to be abused, physically hurt, raped, or worse, in the name of honor and in the bastardized name of Islam is just mind-boggling."

That's one thing that is really bothering me. As more details become known, it is clear that family members knew that this man was an abuser.  Did any of them ever insist that Noorish leave? Did they advise her to call the police?

And to moderate sufi:

It is doubtful that this guy was thinking about "halal" relationships or behaviors. Like the case in South Africa, and like the Charles Stuart case in Boston, his sole concern was for himself and for getting what he wanted.
