NYTimes had a review: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/24/books/in-love-inshallah-american-muslim-women-reveal-lives.html?_r=1

Kinda scared to look into this book. I read the excerpt on HuffPo and it did seem kinda out there. I understand about writing a book with different people's stories, but if it's got like lesbian's coming out and ppl committing zina and what not I mean I don't think I'm going to get anything out of it...

as salaamu alaykum,

I read the excerpt from the Huffington Post too and it seemed - to put it bluntly in one word - kind of nasty. yuck

Maybe the rest of the book is better?

It would be nice if it discussed love (the concept, expressions of love etc with sex being one part of it) but it seems like it's more a work on Muslim women's sexuality and exploring that which is going to be problematic for Muslims I think if its not done in a certain way.

It's not directly related to the book, but being endorsed by them  - MuslimMatters have put up some vignettes by Muslim women (entitled "Sex Ma'sha'allah)...Hena Zuberi said it is for the brothers actually...just saw the disclaimer and it is explicit, so won't put it up here. I'm sure anyone interested in reading it can find it, since it's a large Muslim site.

Thanks sis J - obviously for the married brothers primarily, but opening paragraph states for both unmarried and married bros...anyways, one thing that I really love about Islam, which is reflected in the Seerah of course, was how open our Rasul on this topic - so articles like this, dsicussions like this should take place - and it's unfortunate that wives haven't been able to vocalize their concerns in the previous environment. Hey, it's a natural part of life and as long as it's in the bounds of marriage, there should be open, in a healthy/tasteful way of course, dialoague between both sides - stronger marriages afterall, will lead to a stronger (and happier  Smiley) Muslim society on the larger scale - at least I hope so.

Dr.  desibro's thoughts on the matter.

haha Sis J - you make me laugh (thus the "haha") But this is one is from a single girl, so I'm sure you ID with her to some extent, from your recent past.

Well, being in the medical field, nothing is "gross" anymore and like I said above, if our Prophet wasn't shy to speak about it, then we shouldn't be either. It's better than kids learning from their non-Muslim friends, which probably does happen. Even the two friends I wrote about from med school, one told me that when they heard in school "what they have to do on their wedding night" they were like "ewwww"

I was thankful that my Abba gradually brought things up in terms of puberty and such - and then my high school classmates said their parents never talked to them about such things...so they went on the Sex Ed retreat in high school (we had one in middle school too), but I always felt comfortable with BOTH my parents...though that might be because they're both doc's. Maybe. Just my opinion.

Another piece in the series and I think since it addresses the youth, very relevant to what we've discussed on the board, for example, with my two friends, or even just girls in general...we all have hormones, but the double standard, that it's ok for guys to fool around and girls have to be effevtively shuttered up at home, no going out or mixing, just leads to seeminly good girls to go astray...and as the article says, it takes two. If parents weren't so lax and easy going with their sons who nearly make it impossible for a girl not to give in to temptation, maybe things would be somewhat better...I don't know, but it's definitely an issue that needs to be addressed. And in the long-run, that would hopefullly make for better marraiges - as these damaging pre-martial relationships clearly have an effect on girls' outlook on future partners, them being trustworthy, etc.

I read this one today. Its very well written. I think parents need to pray a very big role here. If we are not open to our children the consequences will always be with our girl child. Its very important to talk to our children boys and girls about sexuality issues.
