Mr. Islamicsocks what Akhan is skeptical about is the rate at which countries are expanding their shale extraction schemes. The consequences might proliferate proportionately. I don't know much about the geotechnics of the shale extraction process and how the chemicals injected affect the geology. How I imagine shale gas extraction is how egg becomes flimsy after the content is drawn off.

How long have people been taking solids from under ground by mining?
How long have they been pumping oil and water from under ground?
Does gas provide more or less support than oil and water, coal, metal and rock that is current taken from the ground in a much larger scale?

We really shouldn't worry what we take out the ground, instead worry about the poisons we put in to in in land fills, toxic dumps, pesticides and others.
All of this scare stories sounds a bit like Pre-traumatic stress disorder  as suffered by Israelis.
We have all heard post traumatic stress disorder where people become insane due to something that happened in the past. Israelis suffer from pre traumatic stress disorder, they all go crazy because they make something up that they say will happen in the future.
So Iran will get nuclear, and kill us all, Muslims will unite and kill us all, that Palestinian baby might one day pick up a stone and kill us all!
Lets kill them all! and you see what they are doing now. And what they get their American puppets to do, using AIPAC to order them.

What I am saying, is nothing has even happened due to shale gas. It is equally as crazy to use it to say, the day of judgement is about to come and kill us all!

Oil and water are usually in layers so their extraction causes uniform settlement. In unconfined cases, they easily flow to the extraction point without leaving hollow vacuum. But in case of shale gas which is encased in shale rocks, fracturing at a point will allow the gas at that point to flow out leaving hollow rock casing. That's how I imagine it.

But as you said we should not allow ourselves suffer pre-traumatic stresses.
