MUSLIM SALAD
By: Aaron Haroon Sellars

Sidi Aaron Haroon Sellars (Allah be pleased with him) said,

“Before Islam I was lost
And after Islam I was lost
Between this and that group
Was I tossed

A bookstore Shaykh
Not even worth a dollar
With do-it-yourself Islam
Who needs a scholar?

Tossed so much
Might as well been a salad
I was quoting Hadeeth
But my wudu was invalid

If I can’t purify my outer
Then what about my inner?
Piles of books
But still a big sinner

What I know, doesn’t show
And now I know better
That’s what happens without the spirit
And only the letter

So attach myself I must
To scholars with unbroken chains
For this is the means
By which pure knowledge remains”

LIKE A BUTTERFLY

By: Aaron Haroon Sellars

The capital of life
Is in every breathe
So take advantage
Before none is left
Don’t judge the truth
By what people do
First find the truth
And do what’s right for you
Lift your soul up high
From the fakeness on the ground
Search deep inside
And the Real will be found

Like a Butterfly
I want to Change!
Like a Butterfly
Fly out of Range!

You can’t see the sun
If you look it in the eye
You can’t live your life
If you never try
If you want to walk on water
You must take a step
But you won’t move a foot
With a faith that is inept
So if you want to move the mountains
You need a power not your own
You can move the mountains

When certainty is shown
Don’t you know that the graveyard
Is the richest place on earth?
Because of all the hopes and dreams
That lay beneath the dirt

Like a Butterfly
I want to Change!
Like a Butterfly
Fly out of Range!

So bless me like Muhammad!
Help me like Moses!
Save me like Jesus!
And all the Saints that know this!

As-salaamu alaykum!

Haroon Sellars once visited a small masjid in MD during an all night qiyaam session with the youth. I wasn't there, but a friend gave me a recording of it. He basically mentioned the ayah about the Hellfire asking for more (Surah Qaaf 50:30), lights out,  listening to an actual recording of various qaris/recitors reciting the same ayah who were all choking up/crying at that part...had the whole place crying...pretty intense...

On another point, he was in a video featuring three college students and their road to Islam...I think it was called "Pathways to Islam"...might be good for da'wah/college Islamic Awareness Weeks, etc.
Gosh, that was a looong time ago...you may not recognize him.

 oldshaykh

"My Lord! Increase me in knowledge." (Qur'aan 20.114)
"Our Lord! We believe, so forgive us, and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of all who show mercy!" (23:109)
"And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves..."(3:10)

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

Br. Haroon Sellars used to come up to our area (upstate NY) pretty often to give talks and to speak at MSA/MYNA conferences... they were always so spiritually nourishing and moving, masha'Allah may Allah bless him and his family...

He always seemed to be really honest about his own spiritual state and struggles, and that was what was really touching... I remember in one talk he was describing his first experiences with the Quran when he was becoming Muslim, and how he as a poet and someone who works with words really found the descriptions in it so evocative and strong... how intense some of the descriptions are, especially of the hellfire and the Day of Judgement, and how humbling that is.  He was like, "Can you imagine me... this weak little slave... encountering something that terrifying and horrible... I'm allergic to cats!  I don't want anything to do with that hellfire stuff!"

lol I don't know why I remember that particular line... it was so funny, but it's so true -- that we as human beings are so weak and in need of Allah (swt) for everything... yet somehow we are not humbled/awed when we see His power and ability manifest in His creation and ayaat or read about His reward and especially His punishment.... subhanAllah...

I remember that all of us were so sad to hear the news that he was moving to the West Coast.... It was around the same time that Imam Zaid was also leaving to go to Zaytuna, so it was kind of hard to accept that two of our most beloved speakers/teachers were leaving us  :'(  Insha'Allah the east coast will rise again Wink  (I've been away for a long time, maybe there are already other speakers/scholars who've developed???)

ps - I think Br. Haroon is in charge of audio/visual production at Zaytuna, I've noticed that some of the beautiful images on the front of some of the CD sets are credited to him (like the Marriage set by Sh. Hamza has a closeup of a rose -- I believe that's one of his pictures).

salaam,

as salaamu alaykum,

one of my favorite poems by Br. Haroon Sellars, though it's a bit painful to read.... makes you reflect and  :'( and  Angry at yourself for not being brave enough to change for the better...

Still
by Haroon Sellars

Still I fail to medicate myself

Still I continue to devastate myself

By doing what I know to be a sin

Have I been given a guarantee that in the end

I will win?

Just because I’m still alive and have an easy living

Doesn’t mean that I’ve been forgiven.

Yes I’m still alive, but how can I expect to survive

Life in the displeasure of Allah!?

I say I “love Allah”, but does Allah love me?

Let’s see, just how real is this so-called

“Spirituality” that you profess to possess

But when you’re alone you digress and don’t confess!

Thought that you could fool ‘em with that beard

And that hijab

Not realizing that at your own heart you have

Taken the deepest stab.

Thought that you could fool them with that thaub

And veil over your face!

How dumb you must have looked in front of the One

Who’s knowledge, hearing and sight penetrate every place!

Why do you feel so secure that Allah is going to forgive you

Everytime?

Do you really feel secure as you drive home from

The scene of your crime?

How do you know the wrath and punishment of Allah

Isn’t waiting for you around the corner?

Don’t you know that the Angel of Death strikes without

A warner?!

How long do I think I have to make things right?

By Allah! If I knew the reality of my sins,

I couldn’t sleep at night!

Afraid of closing my eyes from fear

Of dying in my sleep!

Only to wake up in a grave so dark, lonely and deep!

-Who’s your Lord? my own desires...

-Who’s your Prophet? my own desires...

-What’s your religion? following my own desires...

-Well welcome to the Fire! -Welcome to the fire!!

What an awful place to retire!

A new one from our bro:

I Can’t Explain You (Oh Messenger of God)

by Aaron Haroon Sellars

I could not write about you
For fear
Fear of your presence
And fear of
My hearts’ brittleness
That I might die
In this pursuit
Yet wishing to die
In this state of intoxicated love
This is the conflict within me
Language cannot explain
Except the language
Of tears and laughter
Even the molecules
Of my body
Shake and tremble
With awe and excitement!

I just can’t explain!
Oh Messenger of God!
I can’t explain you!

Sometimes I forget
To say “Prophet” before your name
Not from heedlessness
But from desirous haste
To just say your name!
Muhammad, Muhammad, Muhammad!

I just can’t explain!
Oh Messenger of God!
I can’t explain you!

Oh the mystery of how
You have captured my heart
As a Christian
I loved the Prophets
Before you
But with you
I get them all!
I can love
Abraham, Moses and Jesus
Just by loving you!
Without this love
Your nation falls
With it
They are purified and irresistible!
Let those who
Possess this love
Not be stingy
Take it to the marketplace!
The workplace
And especially the home

It’s hard to explain!
Oh Messenger of God!
I can’t explain you!

Seeing the land of your life
Causes some to live
And seeing your grave
Causes some to die
Nothing is more difficult
Than you

In my youth
I have written easily
My love for many
But when I encountered you
The translator of my heart
Fell mute
Lost in inexplicable wonder!

That is hard to explain!
Oh Messenger of God!
I can’t explain you!

You sacrificed for me
Before I was even born
How should I thank you
As I now walk upon the earth?
My heart holds your love
My tongue sends you blessings
But it is my limbs
That often fall short
All this controversy about you
A proof of the veil
On the hearts of your enemies
And a proof against those
Who only follow you with words
But don’t turn your face from me
As I reach for a drink
From your soft hands

Because it’s hard to explain!
Oh Messenger of God!
I can’t explain you!

I heard one of my teachers say that upon the poet is to write about the Messenger of God, may His peace and blessings be upon him. As a person who often writes things in a form that some call poetry, I have been haunted by the weight of this statement since hearing it!

I converted to the way of life called “Islam” because of an overwhelming sense of the divine origin and authority of the Quran and after a mere glimpse at the life of the Prophet Muhammad, may His peace and blessings be upon him.

So the feeling of love and debt is immense - yet every time I have tried to write something about him… I get stuck! I just sit there frozen with my pen hovering over a piece of paper that ultimately is left blank!

Then, one of my closest companions sent me a link to a YouTube video about the “Mahabbah Awards” which is a unique awards program done in the spirit of love for God and His Messenger.

Unexpectedly, this short and simple video clip opened a flash-flood of emotions and tears within me that I could not control or contain! I jumped up from my chair to try and regain my composure but felt a rumble inside like someone was boiling water in my chest! My knees started to buckle so I sat back down and felt a pressure in my head and heat in my heart that I knew from experience would lead to words!

“Finally!” I said to myself, I have a chance to say something about this amazing Messenger! I quickly grabbed my pen and an orange Post-it notes pad and started to scribble as fast as I could, the English translation of this stream of consciousness and love.
May the Giver of Gifts gift us with loving His beloved more than our own selves.

From the book, Ash-Shifa’ of Qadi ‘Iyad…
Anas said that a man came to the Prophet and asked, “When will the Last Hour come, Messenger of God?” He said, “What have you prepared for it?” He said, “I have not prepared a lot of prayer or fasting or charity for it, but I love God and His Messenger.” The Prophet said, “You will be with the one you love.” (al-Bukhari)

It is related that a woman said to A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her), “Show me the grave of the Messenger of God.” She showed it to her and the woman wept until she died

Morning's Opportunity

I woke today with a sense
Of the great opportunity before me
A chance to rise
Or a chance to ignore me
Will I find myself or blind myself
Ponder this I do
Before moving a single joint
And regretting what I do
Frightening it is!
Perhaps I should cower to the bed
And pull those womb-like covers
Back over my head
But I was not created to sleep!
Slumber is only a pause
That my soul might travel freely
Without concern for bodily cause
I think I'll go for it!
And try something new
Without making any claims
Or promise in what I'll do
Like bring a smile
To a new face
Or bring praise
To a new place
Do a new good
To cover old mistakes
Make a new apology
For God's sake
Oh Lord just help me
To behave!
And seek refuge in your Love
That it may follow me
To my grave
