Salam, I think that the only way we will experience what Makkah was like through the ages now is through pictures and travelogues of the past. Sadly it is completely unrecognizable these days. It's true that it is beautifully modern and huge and more Muslims will be able to achieve Hajj in their lifetime, but I can't help but feel something precious has been lost through these rapid and incredible changes seen in just the last 2 decades.

gosh it looks so empty.

Can you imagine it now!

And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright. Surah 2  Verse 186

wow! daddy dearest used to say that there was a time when there would be only 10-15 people doing the tawaf and that too on hot pebbles and he showed me where he used to park his car and now it is part of the masjid

You know looking at this pic I don't think it's 1800s, but more 1900s. Not sure what those wires are... perhaps audio and floor looks very modern and ppls clothes...
