We honored man by the gift of free will. Half of him is honeybee, the other half snake. True believers are stores of honey. Stores of poison are those who do not believe.

- Rumi, "Mathnawi"

The Almighty Allah says,

"When a servant thinks of Me, I am near.
When he invokes Me, I am with him.
If he reflects on Me in secret, I reply in secret,
And if he acknowledges Me in an assembly,
I acknowledge him in a far superior assembly."

- Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reptd by Abu Huraira

Many prayers are declined because of the rank odor of a corrupt heart rising through the beautiful words. Let the words be wrong, but the meaning right. That flawed utterance is dearer to God.

- Rumi, "The Life and Thought of Rumi"

"When a servant thinks of Me, I am near.
When he invokes Me, I am with him.
If he reflects on Me in secret, I reply in secret,
And if he acknowledges Me in an assembly,

BISMILLAH!

It’s a habit of yours to walk slowly.
You hold a grudge for years.
With such heaviness, how can you be modest?
With such attachments, do you expect to arrive anywhere?

Be wide as the air to learn a secret.
Right now you’re equal portions clay
and water, thick mud.

Abraham learned how the sun and moon and the stars all set.
He said, No longer will I try to assign partners for God.

You are so weak. Give up to grace.
The ocean takes care of each wave
till it gets to shore.

You need more help than you know.
You’re trying to live your life in open scaffolding.

Say Bismillah, In the name God,
As the priest does with knife when he offers an animal.

Bismillah your old self
to find your real name.

The sunbeam fell upon the wall;
the wall received a borrowed splendour.
Why set your heart on a piece of turf,
O simple one?  Seek out the Source
which shines forever.
Masnavi 2.708-709

If you don’t see the hidden River,
see how the waterwheel of stars continually turns.
If the heavens receive no rest from being moved by Love,
heart, don’t ask for rest – be a circling star.

Do you think God lets you cling to any branch?
Wherever you make an attachment, it will be broken.
Before God everything is like a ball,
subjected to and prostrating before the bat.

How should you, O my heart,
being only one of a hundred billion particles,
not be in restless movement at Love’s command?
Masnavi 6.913-915; 926-927.

Whether you are fast or slow, eventually
you will find what you are seeking.
Always devote yourself wholeheartedly to your search.
Even though you may limp or be bent double,
do not abandon your search,
but drag yourself ever towards Him.
Masnavi 3.978-980

‘The body is a tent for the spirit,
an ark for Noah’
Masnavi 2.455

Listen, O drop, give yourself up without regret,
and in exchange gain the Ocean.
Listen, O drop, bestow upon yourself this honour,
and in the arms of the Sea be secure.
Who indeed should be so fortunate?
An Ocean wooing a drop!
In God’s name, in God’s name, sell and buy at once!
Give a drop, and take this Sea full of pearls’
Masnavi 4.2619-2622

‘The Beloved shines like the sun,
and the lover whirls like a mote of dust.
When the spring breeze of love moves,
every branch dances that is not dried-up’
Mevlana, Quatrain 937

Did I not tell you, ‘Do not leave, for I am your friend’?
For in this mirage of nothingness I am the Fountainhead of Life!
Even if in anger you leave Me for a hundred thousand years,
in the end you will return, for I am your true Goal!

Did I not tell you, ‘Be not content with worldly form’?
For I am the fashioner of the tabernacle of your contentment!
Did I not tell you, ‘I am the Sea and you are but a single fish’?
Do not be tempted ashore, for I am your Crystal Sea!

Did I not tell you, ‘Do not fly like a bird to the snare’?
Come to Me, for I am the very Power of your flight!
Did I not tell you, ‘They will rob you and leave you numb with cold’?
But I am the Fire and the Warmth and Heat of your desire!

Did I not tell you, ‘They will taint your character,
until you forget that I am your Source of Purity’?
Did I not tell you, ‘Do not question how I direct your affairs’?
For I am the Creator without directions.

If you heart is a lamp, let it lead you to your true path.
And if you are godly, know that I am your Lord!’
Mevlana, Divan-i Shams, Ghazal 1725

‘May my heart never abandon your face,
or abandon your innumerable favours!
If a thorn bush grows on top of my grave,
that thorn bush will still long for you’
Mevlana, Quatrain 1048

‘When I die and you wish to visit me,
do not come to my grave without a drum,
for at God’s banquet mourners have no place’
Mevlana, Divan-i Shams 683

Going to say this has to be Rumi...

Whatever has passed,
whether of sorrow or joy,
of tears or laughter,
came forth from the light of Your eye,
so what is there to fear?

Whatever has reached us from You
is a mercy within a mercy ,
even though it may wear a wry face
and a robe of darkest ebony;
what is there to fear?

Beloved, the whole world
came dancing into existence
at a single glance from You,
a single breath from Your lips;
in that love what is there to fear?

A preacher once stood up and began
To pray for all wrongdoers exclusively.
He raised his hands, saying, "My Lord, show mercy
To those wicked miserable crooks,
To all those who make good people suffer,
With Christian monks and all disbelievers ....
From them I experienced so much hatred and compulsion
That I was driven from evil to good,
For whenever I turned towards the world,
I was hit painfully by their hand
And turned back to God for help.
Thus the misguided ones guided me to the straight path,
Becoming, as it were, the reason for my salvation,
Therefore I intercede for them."
-- Rumi

A person called "O God!" for many nights
Until his mouth was sweetened with the sound of it.
"You call a lot," mocked Satan, "but
Where is God's answer, 'Here am I?'
There won't ever be an answer. Stop.
For how long do you want to call? Keep quiet."
When he resigned, ashamed and sad,
Khidr appeared to him in a dream
Saying, "Why don't you call Him any more?
Do you regret what you have been longing for?"
He said, "There never was an answer, 'Here am I',
So I'm afraid He is rejecting me."
Your call, "O God!" is My call, "Here am I!"
Your pain and longing is a message from Myself,
And all your efforts to come near
Is My sign that I am pulling you into My presence.
Your love and longing are My favour to you.
One call, "O God!" contains a hundred "Here am I!"

To me in this poem Rumi is talking about how this Dunya is worth so little and how we should really not be doing anything for others as ultimately their opinion/thoughts/persuasions mean so little. When we die, how many people will care really? The few family members, maybe some close friends; then each will return to their lives and move on. Yet in life, we lived for them and their opinions, when we should have only be doing things with Allah's pleasure only in mind. Dunya pursues us and talks about all these things, about how this is important and how we should be doing this to compete, to get ahead, to look good, and in the end it's all just empty talk. -- J.
=================

I died once but no one shed a tear

so if I live again I will know how to be.

You pursue me with your ignorant talk

which to me sounds so empty.

--Rumi

Rumi wrote in Persian (Farsi?) as far as I know, and nowadays there are some really nice English translations but have yet to hear Rumi in Urdu!! That would be interesting!

I am not very sure if Rumi wrote in urdu too but there may be urdu translations of poems and quotes which are similar to the English ones. They sound as sweet.

Will try finding them online..but would be nice if someone could post them here. Smiley

(Example:A famous one-it's english version is on board.

Remember me.

I will be with you in the grave
on the night you leave behind
your shop and your family.
When you hear my soft voice
echoing in your tomb,
you will realize
that you were never hidden from my eyes.
I am the pure awareness within your heart,
with you during joy and celebration,
suffering and despair.

On that strange and fateful night
you will hear a familar voice --
you'll be rescued from the fangs of snakes
and the searing sting of scorpions.
The euphoria of love will sweep over your grave;
it will bring wine and friends, candles and food.

When the light of realization dawns,
shouting and upheaval
will rise up from the graves!
The dust of ages will be stirred
by the cities of ecstasy,
by the banging of drums,
by the clamor of revolt!

Dead bodies will tear off their shrouds
and stuff their ears in fright--
What use are the senses and the ears
before the blast of that Trumpet?

Look and you will see my form
whether you are looking at yourself
or toward that noise and confusion.

Don't be blurry-eyed,
See me clearly-
See my beauty without the old eyes of delusion.

Beware! Beware!
Don't mistake me for this human form.
The soul is not obscured by forms.
Even if it were wrapped in a hundred folds of felt
the rays of the soul's light
would still shine through.

Beat the drum,
Follow the minstrels of the city.
It's a day of renewal
when every young man
walks boldly on the path of love.

Had everyone sought God
Instead of crumbs and copper coins
T'hey would not be sitting on the edge of the moat
in darkness and regret.

What kind of gossip-house
have you opened in our city?
Close your lips
and shine on the world
like loving sunlight.

Shine like the Sun of Tabriz rising in the East.
Shine like the star of victory.
Shine like the whole universe is yours!

translated by Jonathan Star
"Rumi - In the Arms of the Beloved"
